Worrying Anthony Elanga stats could suggest January loan move – Reuters

Anthony Martial’s injury and the delay in signing Antony gave Anthony Elanga the chance to play in five of Manchester United’s seven appearances this season.

After a full pre-season, expectations were high that the 20-year-old could continue after a promising end to the season under Ralf Rangnick.

But Elanga’s performance has been disappointing, as the stats point out.

In terms of attacking stats, Elanga has one assist in five games without a goal.

He averaged just over one shot every two games and only managed one shot on target in the entire campaign.

Elanga also missed two big chances.

The passing statistics also make for depressing reading, especially the crossover. In five games, Elanga hasn’t made any accurate crosses. His long ball accuracy is only 2 of 4 and he has only completed 73% of passes in his own half.

The winger managed only 25% of his dribbles and he lost the ball 6.2 times.

Obviously, with a fully fit squad at his disposal, Erik ten Hag might not continue to pick Elanga on such a regular basis. Antony is likely to be first choice on the right wing and Jadon Sancho on the left, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo all capable of being turned in and out of the centre-forward position to the wings .

However, there is an argument that based on these stats, players like Alejandro Garnacho could have an opportunity ahead of Elanga should the need for reinforcements arise.

Of course, all footballers suffer from a loss of form from time to time and a poor five-game spell is no reason to write off an Academy graduate who was looking for a bright future.

It may be, however, that unless something changes ahead of the World Cup, the Swede could be considered for a loan move in January as he looks to move on from this milestone in his career.
