Saul delivers Chelsea loan verdict

Saul Niguez has revealed he is grateful to Chelsea for being given the chance to spend the 2021/22 season on loan at Stamford Bridge despite their failure to impress.

The Spaniard was a surprise arrival for the Blues last season but failed to assert himself in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI and was often a disappointment when he played.

Back at Atletico Madrid, Saul told the club’s website about his experience in England and what he enjoyed about his year away from Wanda Metropolitano.

“Despite the fact that I didn’t get the minutes I wanted, I think it was a good experience for me to come out at a time when I wasn’t feeling well mentally,” he said.

“I was able to reset myself, learn from a new culture, lead a new life, meet a new club, fans. I can only be grateful to all the people at Chelsea for their trust and to my team-mates for having made the year very bearable and helping me, and to Atleti for making it easy.

“I think this season has helped me improve in many ways, I have learned a lot and it will be useful for this new season.”

Saul confirmed in early June that he was not staying permanently with Chelsea, but was instead returning to an Atletico side looking to improve on their third-place finish in La Liga last season.
