Destination Tottenham: Udogie to undergo medical before loan to Udinese
Maybe it really was (*cough*)…predestined. The Evening Standard are now writing that Tottenham Hotspur target and 19-year-old Udinese defender Destiny Udogie is set to undergo a medical in Italy before finalizing an official transfer to Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Udogie will then be immediately loaned to the Serie A club for the duration of the 2022-23 season.
We’ve been following this movement for a few days now, and there’s not a ton of new information – just a continuation of the process. Udogie is a player for the future – he had a stellar season for Udinese last season as a left winger, and Tottenham almost certainly see him as a possible replacement for Ivan Perisic, who Spurs signed in the summer but who is also 34 years old and does not have many years left in his career.
A loan for Udogie means he is following the same general path as Pape Matar Sarr and Bryan Gil, two young players with huge upsides who spent time on loan last season as there were already veterans in their positions. It’s good for Udogie, who knows he will continue to get regular first-team minutes at a club he knows, and also that he has an improved squad to compete with in the Premier League when his loan ends. .
The medical going on in Italy probably means we won’t get the brilliantly produced hyped video when the transfer finally happens, but that’s okay. Previous reports suggested that Udogie’s transfer fee was between £20-22m.
