Server moved, and I'm not fleeing to Mexico

The server for the Rails Day site has been moved and the last few days have been spent converting the site to Mephisto to enable that process. Now that we’re (mostly) transferred over, here’s an update on the situation:

  • I’m not moving to Mexico with any prizes. Actually, I don’t have any of the prizes. You can come look in my apartment if you want. Nor have I thrown in the towel on this whole thing.
  • I’d like to deeply thank Geoff Grosenbach and David Verba, who both judged entries and got me their picks for the contest.
  • Thanks to Geoff and David, we’re down to a short list of teams which we will take some time to rank within the categories and give us the final results ASAP.
  • The app controlling registrations is down due to the server move, and it will be restored as soon as results are posted.
  • We’re working to fight against comment spam as much as possible. Some of the old articles got hit very hard, but new one’s should be okay.

I apologize for the lack of communication and results on this. This was my (Bryan’s) fault, not anyone else’s. In the end, Rails Day just kind of got too big for its own good. It’s almost over, but if you guys could keep the (somewhat deserved) bashing toned down a bit, it would help me feel a little better in the mean time.

To test comments, I’ll start by saying thanks Bryan!

It’s unfortunate the judging has taken so long, but other than that Rails Day was a blast. I’m up for next year if there is one. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this!

Yeah, it has taken some time, but I’m still game for next year! BTW, I think you’ve just nipped most of the bashing in the bud, as now we at least know (some of) what’s going on :-D

Great to hear the competition is still alive :)

Ben 25 Sep 18:24

That’s great news.

Any rough estimates as to when the results will be out?

Adrian 26 Sep 07:43

i think the results have came out havent they?

This post doesn’t constitute as proof that you’re not in Mexico. If I were fleeing to Mexico, I’d post like this to buy time, too. ;)

Glad to see an update!

Glad to see it’s not dead. Just tell me when and where to see the Rails Forum prize. :) Good luck to everyone.

why not let the contestants judge it next year. Put in an automated system where they can vote for any project except their own. Maybe say each contestant has to vote for >= n other projects or their project will be excluded from winning.

Ryan 28 Sep 18:03

masukomi, it seems like that would work at first, but the problem is the contestants aren’t motivated to vote for the best entries because that is their competition. Although extremely poor sportsmanship, the best strategy would be to vote for the entries least likely to win.

Are you guys going to publish the short list?

and 1 month later….

Might have been better if you had left for Mexico….

Rails Day Rules!!

Ryan 03 Oct 21:44

Actually it’s just a week and a half later (the date on the home page is wrong), but still….

1

Flamov 04 Oct 08:23

;D good to hear!

:

I believe the “dates” on the home page are month/year, i.e. “September 2006”. The URL (/2006/9/22/...) belies the actual posting date.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the tip off on the dates issue… it was a glitch in converting the Typo templates to Liquid for Mephisto.

Should be fixed now.

re the strategy of voting for the worst ones. That wouldn’t work because if everyone’s voting for the worst ones then the worst ones would win not your theoretically good one. If everyone isn’t voting for crappy ones then votes for bad ones would just be statistical noise and not really affect anything. Combine that with requiring competitors to fill out a form after the competition that indicates if they finished and if so if they want their project to be considered in voting and you’ve seriously narrowed down the field for consideration. People, in general, aren’t going to ask their crappy ones to be considered for voting if they no there’s no way in hell it’s going to win.

Only one week ‘til the four month anniversary. Can we please get the results soon, or at least an update?

1

Bryan Helmkamp 13 Oct 04:20

The results have been decided. We’ve got a couple loose ends to tie up, but they will be online VERY SOON.

1

Ryan 13 Oct 14:21

Yay! Thanks for all your work on this. :)

Ben 14 Oct 06:09

How long is very soon?

Glad to hear you finally got it all sorted out.

Next year, I think a bit more planning may be needed.

Excellent! My app’s been live since the closing bell. I told folks I’ve leave it exactly as-is until the results came in, and the typos on my front page are really starting to get to me :)

You are such a fuckin loser.

Ben 18 Oct 05:49

The tension is killing me.

Seriously though, what’s happening now? I thought you said you had the results, it doesn’t take four days to write a post about the results.
